Mahogany bookcases – These pieces can be uses for not only books, but also are very versatile and you can utilize them in any other part of your home, such as bathrooms, bedrooms, entertainment room, living room, and any other place you can think of. Some pieces serve as display cabinets, with glass. Others have two glass doors at the top. Many pieces will combine this feature with drawers and doors at the bottom. A Dwarf bookcase with adjustable shelves makes for a very versatile piece. Another gorgeous piece is a Victorian mahogany chiffonier. It has a raised back with shelf and table and a glass bookcase area at the bottom. Whether it is a secretaire bookcase, a cupboard bookcase, an open bookcase or a wall mounted bookcase, these Victorian pieces are some of the most versatile pieces of mahogany antiques you can buy.

Another versatile piece of mahogany antiques that can be used throughout your home is a Victorian armchair. This piece is attractive and compact enough to be used in many rooms. Another interesting desk is a mahogany twin pedestal cylinder desk. This piece is very useful as a desk, but can be used as a laptop and kitchen center to pay bills and get organized. Writing bureaus and Victorian Davenports are some pieces that will add interest to your décor.

How to Clean Your Mahogany Antiques

Posted under bookcase antiques

The best way to maintain the beauty of mahogany antiques is by cleaning these pieces the proper way. Many times, these pieces have been in the family for years, and depending on the shape that they arrive to our households, the task will be an easy one or not. Mahogany antique furniture that has been passed down comes with a rich history behind it. This is one of the reasons why it is important to preserve its beauty and shape – so it can continue to be enjoyed by future generations of the same family, and sharing its rich past. Whether it is a set of antique tables, a mahogany bookcase, sideboard antiques, desks antiques, or wardrobe antiques, these “full of rich history pieces” will make a delightful addition to any décor. The number one rule is to match the piece to the mood of the décor. In the case of a handed down piece that does not match the current décor, but is a valuable piece (whether in monetary or sentimental historic value), a person has two choices – to change the entire décor of the room to match the piece (something very unlikely to happen), or to make that piece the main focus. In this case, the piece will stand in a prominent area and be the center of attention. Trying to blend the piece into the existent décor may work, if the person uses the correct accessories on it, but is not always guaranteed to work. Instead of trying to hide the piece, why not enhance it and showcase it?

To preserve these valuable pieces cleaning is key. Dusting frequently is important, as dust can accumulate, and blending with skin oils will produce spots on the mahogany. Avoiding harsh cleaning chemicals, direct sunlight, and moist areas is necessary to preserve the wood’s beauty and rich patina.

Using clean soft rags to dust and protect the piece is important. Flannel works well. Do not use any fabrics that will have anything on them that will scratch the wood. Some recommend the use of mineral spirits to clean mahogany, but you can also buy a cleaning protectant wax to do the job. The wax or liquid cleaner will get rid of dirt while leaving the surface protected against dirt and fingerprints – it will leave a barrier of protection. It is important not to misuse these cleaners, or overuse them. Once a month cleaning with a furniture wax will do the job. However, dusting must be done regularly so the dust does not accumulate on the surface and create spots.

In the case of spilling something on the wood, it is important to act quickly and clean the area. If the spill caused wood damage (alcohol, glue, nail polish, nail polish remover …), then the area will have to be polished and refinished. This task is better left to an antiques’ professional, especially if it is a valuable antique.

Using care while handling mahogany antiques will lessen scratches and will keep the finish in best shape. If scratches occur, there are fillers in the market that match the color of the wood. These are similar to crayons, but must be applied with care and trying to match the color as best as possible. A professional better restores valuable antiques. These are some tips to keep your mahogany antiques looking their best for years to come.

1853ca8af6d7c15 Where to Find Victorian Mahogany Antiques

Antique pieces are beautiful and must be cared for appropriately in order to preserve their beauty and hand them down to the next generation. Some of the most gorgeous pieces are mahogany antiques from the Victorian period. Many people who cannot afford these Victorian antique pieces, but covet their beauty opt for Victorian antique reproductions to satisfy their lust for these pieces. However, that is not to say that one will never be able to obtain one of these mahogany antiques, and one should never discount the possibility of coming across one of the many mahogany antiques furniture that may be lurking around the attic of many families. One way to look for these pieces is to go to garage or yard sales in your area or nearby areas. Ask the family if they might have any other pieces of mahogany furniture in the home that have not been put out, but that they will be willing to sell in the future. Mention some pieces like mirror antiques, sideboard antiques, wardrobe antiques, desk antiques, antique tables, and others; these may trigger their memory. Sometimes they may refer you to another family member who might be looking to get rid of some pieces. Many families do not get to take out everything that they are willing to sell, so it does not hurt to ask questions.

Consider estate sales; many times, you may be able to find some excellent pieces at bargain prices. Storage container sales are another source of mahogany antiques. Drive by your town and nearby areas after the weekend or Sunday evening; most likely people will put some furniture at the curve for any takers who might be interested. You might find your lucky piece when you least expected. Know when your town’s big garbage day is and also when the town’s wide garage sale is. Another source for finding mahogany antique furniture is by checking foreclosures. Befriend a real estate agent or bank official who can inform you of any foreclosures near your area. If you see for sale signs, politely ask the homeowner if he/she might have any pieces to sell. Other sources to find mahogany antiques are the newspaper ads, eBay, posted ads in supermarket boards, and Craigslist. Many times, you can find antique furniture on this last site free for the taking, if you are lucky to contact the person first. Many people need to move quickly from their homes or are doing a complete remodel and do not have time or do not want to bother with selling these pieces and prefer to give them away fast to the first taker. This is where you can step in and find your treasure. Most times, you can email, phone or drive by, depending on the ad, so make sure to check these ads daily, as free pieces tend to go quickly. Usually, there is a picture in the ad to give you an idea of what the piece of furniture looks like. Once you meet with the person, do not forget to ask about any other pieces he/she might have. Use precaution when going to places you are not familiar with and follow safety rules.

Finding affordable   from the Victorian period may be easier than you think. With a little bit of work and research, and some walking around you might be able to find the furniture piece of your dreams.

Mahogany Antiques – What makes Mahogany so great!!

Posted under Mahogany antiques

Mahogany Antiques What makes Mahogany so great!!

Mahogany is a very interesting piece of wood. it is very shisticated and screams old world. Mahogay antiques are one of my favorites.

The wood is rich and luxurious and seems to fit with different decor. One of my favorite antiques is a Mahogany bookcase I own and it sites right in front of me at my desk. I always stare at it and look at the detail and craftsmanship that was put into each section.

Mahogany antiques are truly a lifetime investment. I am a big fan of dark woods such as Mahogany. I also like Cherry wood and Walnut, but Mahogany is by far my favorite…

You can mix mahogany antique furniture with modern day furniture and still get a nice eclectic effect and it really looks good together.

Mahogany antiques can date back to 1760 ( Queen Anne).  You can get some really old antiques that are reproduction, and are still valuable and very charming.

You can search your local flea markets, yard sales, or try checking out your local antique shops.

You can have your mahogany antiques refinished repaired or polished  if they are old and worn.

You really have to get a pro to make sure they are adequate for the job. Sometimes this will make the difference on the price of a unit if someone finishes it wrong and does not know what they are doing.

Mahagony antiques are very popular and are very pricey for the right pieces. You can always have an appraiser check out your antiques and they can help you determine the value of each piece.. It is always nice to know when you have an old piece of history..

You should also check out some of the old flip table top mahogany antique tables. They are truly a work of art and really can be an accent to a whole room, or a focal point in a corner.
